Really cool. I liked the glitch beat/staccato note part in the second half of the song (and the choir sounded lovely - what instrument/vst plugin did you use for that? Curious). I liked the sound of the first half, especially the guitar chord thing that accompanied the kick. That last string (3rd one? the highest string you used) bugged me because it felt like its rhythm was slightly off. I don't know if that might be because the string had a slow attack/fade-in which made it seem late for notes. Anyway, nicely done.

vai90 responds:

Oh, the choir is just a sample, not a particular instrument/plugin. Thx for the reviews, especially the technical criticisms. Appreciate that a lot. Regarding the high string: I actually think it's on time. You do mean the one coming in at 1:26 right? Don't see (or hear rather) anything wrong with it.

I'm not sure how this got down to 2.72/5. You got some haters, my friend. Meanwhile, the beat is excellent. I love the drum roll and the crash. I don't hear crashes too often in hip hop beats, but you work them quite well. I think maybe the crash is a slight, slight bit too loud. Slight. Minor fix. I love the stuttered horn at :50. The chord progressions are very cool as well - I'm not sure if it's a sample you chopped or something you wrote, but it sounds impressive nonetheless. THEN the beat changes at 1:34. I love it when the beat changes. I never expect that shit. You had an El-P moment. This beat's an impressive piece of work.

B-RadGfromOV responds:

Thanks dude.

Excellent chopping. The beat feels like a dense alphabet soup of different things coalescing. I really enjoyed it.

B-RadGfromOV responds:

Cool, nice metaphor there, thanks for listening.

Nice. The bass and kick have a great relationship (foundation to any good mix) and the clinky high pitched instrument offers a nice contrast (high frequency) to the bassey sounds down below. You could go places with this.

TheZaaL responds:

Yeah, I guess I could, but I wasn't planning to do so. Too bad!! Mabe later when I'll be out of ideas!

Thanks for the comments!

Isn't that a didgeridoo? I heard that in Machinarium, in the one part where you help all the street musicians. This piece could go in interesting directions. I love the wallop the bass has. The kick takes a while to finish reverberating (or whatever the right word is). Cool shit.

Troisnyx responds:

Yep, it's a didge. : ) And there are two kicks in this thing -- an odaiko (the biggest Japanese drum), and that one appears towards the end; and a hirado, which is the second biggest.

I'm glad you liked this piece!

Sounds like a rodeo, don't you think? Curious - what plugins/software did you use? The drums sound a bit more sophisticated than what I could manage with some 8-bit VSTi plugins (as in, mine sounded like fart noise drums). Nice work, man.

basheman responds:

Thanks! :)

I use the Sid expansion pack for Nexus 2. I compose my music in Fl studio 8 ^^

I don't mean to be an ass, but if I didn't read your comments, I would've thought the sound of the vibrations was you farting profusely throughout the entire song. OKAY. Now that I got that out of my system - lovely piano playing. You got skills. Next time, bring a better mic, will ya?

Troisnyx responds:

I'll try! I don't have one yet, but it'll be awesome to have one by the time I reach Stonyhurst (or Woldingham)!

Thanks for listening, by the way. ^_^

Just curious, are you a jazz purist? I'm asking because I was about to say the sax could use some compression in spots, but I didn't know if you were doing dynamics on purpose. Oh wait, it's Canon in D. DUH. Sorry, I'm a music noob, I forgot classical music had dynamics in it. You're probably asking yourself why if I made a mistake don't I just hold down the backspace key and type my review again, but I think it helps if I just illustrate my thought process. So... anyway, you got some chops as a sax player. Now, this is me talking, I listen to hip hop and shit, so you can disregard my advice totally, but I think the recording would benefit from some compression and EQ. Compression because whenever you got loud I had to turn my speakers down and whenever you got soft I turned them right back up (then again, hip hop tends to stay at one volume level the entire time). Also, EQ because there's some frequencies in the recording that tend to grate (between 2 and 4 kHz - if you have FL Studio, these frequencies are labeled as "Upper Mids" in the Parametric EQ 2 plugin) - if you cut back those annoying frequencies just a bit, I'd be able to listen to this louder without wrecking my ears. Otherwise, nice sax playing! Keep up practicing, bro!

Hey thanks for leaving the review!
I really know nothing about music editing, so I guess for now I am forced to be a purist.
Likewise, I think you're right about me benefiting from editing. Unfotunatley I have no idea how.
Is it hard to learn to edit, or do you need some expensive program?
Because if you do, then could i have sombody edit one song for me to show what it would sound like as opposed to no edditing?
please pm me with an answer when you get the chance, and thanks for the awesome review.
I guess I could call you a review purist ;D

Wait, I'm confused. This was a sample library? You weren't playing guitar here? Because that would be some seriously realistic guitar sounds, unless you used a sample library for the choir thing instead. I don't know. You can probably fill me in. Anyway, the part writing was quite good. The piece actually sounds really cool.

IronBaldrick responds:

The guitar was real, but the strings, flute and choir were all a sample library, sorry I didn't make that clear!

I like the slight BT Stutter thing that seems to happen after every kick. I think the jingles are a bit loud. The string/synths that come in at :42 sound really really cool. Like the melody, but I really like the way the instrument sounds. The snares kinda bored me. I think you could find a drum sample with a bit more personality, maybe a bit more crunchiness. Same with the hats. Kick is fine though, it sounds cool.

Kasperkain responds:

Advice taken. I just downloaded some harder samples to use for my next song. And the jingles (I assume you mean the music box sound thingy) wasn't that loud to begin with. It somehow increased in volume when I converted it into MP3. But I'm really glad you liked it and i'm gonna try to make my next one heavier, Just for you :P

PS. if you know some really good dubstep samples, Give my inbox a holla!

I do music because I'm bored.
