I can't pin it down -- it's kinda hip hop, but it's kinda trance too! I like the rhythms you got going on. That cool buzzy bassline thing sounds great too.

xxxZigZagxxx responds:

thanks. phosphorus procedure. you're the man. :)

Does this keyboard got all these funky ass sounds built in? That g-funk whine? Those strings? That bass? Those crispy ass drums? That shit is raw as hell.

fearing responds:

I use a novation nocturn 49 to control a bunch of soft synths, my favourites for getting these sounds -

NI Pro - 53 (awesome keys, lead whines, some good basses, great synth brass sounds, for that old michael jackson feel), SQ8L (this ones free, it's basically a model on Ensoniq SQ80, which is perfect for those 80s sounds), Korg M1 ( I used this for those 90s string hits, it has that wicked 90s house vibe), MinimogueVA (another free one I think, modelled on a minimoog, which is perfect for those synth funk basses and wicked leads), Piano One ( for the piano obviously, haha, but it's a great free one, lot of dynamics)

I forgot to mention that I used samples for the drums on this, they're from a pack called filthy drums, which has some great boom bap kits, kits pushed through reel 2 reel machines, kits cut from old records etc.

Thanks for checkin it again dude!

That bass sounds killer, dude! Where can I listen to more of this James' dude's stuff?

The vocals at 1:25 sounded really cool.

I got way more of a 90s indie rock vibe from this than any sort of 80s vibe. Especially at the beginning, with how ramshackle and lo-fi a lot of the instruments were sounding.

Really cool stuff, dude.

fearing responds:

Thanks man! Yeah I guess it definitely has a 90s vibe about it too, it was mainly a reference to the 80s synth aesthetics I used really :)

James makes awesome music man, he's a killer bassist, but mainly makes electronic/hip hop stuff. Google "auxiliary phoenix" to find his bandcamp site

You sidechain the vocals? It sounds really cool. I think it works with the background vocals, but it kinda chops up the lead vocal a bit, obscuring the lyrics just a tad. Still a cool effect, though.

I like the tape hiss in the back. Makes the recording sound really warm, like I'm listening to some really old Elliott Smith tape or something.

I dig the drums.

Cool track, man. Very interessante.

Whoa, where did the creepy voices at the end come from? They sounded awesome.

I like the textures you had going on throughout. Nice mix of different string/piano instruments. I really enjoyed the drums you used. (I sound like a broken record saying this, but I keep getting a silent hill 2 vibe from your tracks, which is a good thing, I really enjoy that kind of music).

I particularly enjoyed what you did at 1:19. Interesting contrast, and the strings/keyboard combo sounded really creepy and interesting. I was curious how you did that. VSTs, or some kind of sample set? Did you have a particularly dissonant chord going on there? I couldn't really figure out what it was.

My only beef with the track is that during the aforementioned 1:19 section, you use these different drums, which sound great by the way, but they have this sorta clipping thing going on. I forget the word for it, but they're still in the middle of resonating when you cut them off. If you smoothed it out with some kind of ASDR envelope tweaking (a little release or attack or whatever) it would really smooth it out. Or, if you use FL studio, I think the sampler lets you adjust the fade-in/out on a given sample.

Again, really cool track. I really enjoyed it.

Hey, thanks a lot for your review, I'll make sure to answer each of your questions.

So First of All, the voices are from a french game called OFF its name is Silencio.

The mix I've been using is a modified sample of Etherreal Autumn by Zero-G, I've been modyfing it a lot to get something really personal, I'm using Kontakt to get a sampler that is worth it.

I see what you mean by that, Yeah I haven't noticed at all! Thanks for remiding it, I'm using Ableton, I think I'll just smooth it out with Kontakt!

Thanks a lot for your review dude, the next Remasterisation will be : Breastfeeding Sensual Repressions.

I love this. I love the filter sweep on the intro, I love the background strings, I love the bass and drums and how they're mixed, all that.

The only things that bug me are: sometimes the strings make a little clip noise when switching from one chop/chord to another. Putting some slight attack/fade-in on that would alleviate it.

The other thing was the squirelly synth that came in around 0:17. I'm not sure if it fit the cloud rap vibe like the rest of the instruments. Maybe you can try eq-ing it a different way and add a shit ton of reverb on there to make it fit the track a little better. Right now it sounds like it belongs in a different beat.

Other than that, I really really like this track. I listened to the whole thing and enjoyed it front to back.

trazzz123 responds:

Thank you so much for your responses!

I noticed the clipping on the chops as well and for whatever reason I didn't think about messing with the attack. I think that'd solve it.

I agree with you on the synth at 0:17. My friend send that to me on a stem and I really liked the other FX on the stem so I kept it. I might ask him to remove it.

Again, thank you for the thoughtful response!

The strings at 0:21 sound amazing.

I like the 80s smooth jazz feel of the track, especially the drums. Sounds like something MF Doom would rap over.

Is there two basslines going on? I hear a squelchy synth bass, but then I heard one of those Yamaha keyboard fretless-bass-simulation things near the end of the track, too. Sounds cool. I dig the combination.

OHHH THIS IS GROOVY

I like this a lot. I like that atmospheric string wash thing (flylo interlude kinda thing)

Bassline's ill

This could totally be some adult swim bumper shit

It could use some pitched down rappers sounding like demons for sure

So digging this

BOULLIE responds:

Thanks Phos! XD

I was afraid this one would come under intense crit for some reason.

I love that bass. The snare hits soooooo hard.

The drum rhythm is great. I love what the hats are doing.

Chill vibes from the samples. Feel like I'm tip-toeing through a haunted house, but the ghosts are really friendly or whatever.

B-RadGfromOV responds:

Friendly ghosts... Yo I got Casper spitting some chilling rhymes to this on the remix.

Thanks for the praise, glad you like.

I really dig this. The drums sound great.

I'm always a fan of messed-around-with piano, whether it's chopped up or out of tune or whatever. That said, I feel like the piano got kinda muddy. I don't know if it's an EQ thing, or if the echo/delay/reverb on the piano causes the chords to pile on top of each other too much or what. An easy fix would probably be cutting a little bit of bass out of the piano. That might let the track breathe a bit.

That said, 1:44 worked really well, especially in tandem with the bass. I just wish there was more contrast between the chill parts and the freaky parts, but they all sounded kinda frantic.

I still really enjoyed listening to it. Lots of interesting ideas at play here.

trazzz123 responds:

Thank you so much for the very thoughtful review!

I do music because I'm bored.
