This an old one or new one? Sounds dope.

Love the reversing.

BOULLIE responds:

Made it a couple weeks ago. I guess old? lol. Tryna get used to these new headphones tho

Thanks fer checkin een big homie phos

I really dig the ooh throughout, and the 0:24 part. I like the weird snare placement the beat has going on. I got a habit of putting my snares on 2 and 4 no matter what, and I guess it wouldn't hurt to mix it up once in a while. This beat's cool. Nice noir feel to it. Kinda druggy, and hazy.

B-RadGfromOV responds:

Yeah I been having a problem with inspiration and Basically everythings been coming out as a standard boom bat boom bat lately, so I tried to mix up the drum patterns a bit to spruce shit up which I used to do a lot of, to pretty fun and unique effect. Thanks for listening.

This beat is cool. Mad subtle bassline. I kinda wish it would go back and forth more often between the way the intro handled the sample (play first half, but silent the second half) and the part where the rest of the beat came in (play whole thing). That cool vocal wah wah stuff was cool. Or whatever the keyboard stuff is. All the panning and whatnot on it is cool, too.
I couldn't figure out whether or not I liked that slight clipping on the chops. In the intro it really sticks out because not much is going on, but later on I didn't notice it at all.
I dig it tho. Those drums are so sloshy.

BOULLIE responds:

i tried for a while to get those clips out. Can't explain what was happening at the time now that I think on it.

Was prolly just sloppy cutting

This is so 80s, dawg! It's got that Paul's Boutique thing going on where every 30 seconds or so I hear a completely different set of drums -- first the clap, snareroll and cowbell thing, then the 808 kicks and herbie hancock rockit snares, then that stanton warriors shit, and then this kurtis blow shit, where you get all these drums from, man?

Definitely a party vibe. I think that main chord synth thing could use a little bit of reverb to give some space, cause everything in the mix sounds really close to my ears. I dunno.

xxxZigZagxxx responds:

Thanks, phospho. I've heard you say that my songs sound like Paul's Botique once before already, and I consider that a major compliment. So yeah, thanks for that. To tell you the truth, I don't download many drums, most of them are drums from "trap" kits but I tend not to use the usual "kicks" and "snares" that come with the pack, I like to use all the weird percussion sounds like cowbells and guiros and raw claps, swooshes and all that jazz. I've also adopted this really weird thing lately of using way too many vocal samples on my songs. It's just a strange desire I have and I understand it's really gimmicky but I love it :)

Yeah everyone's telling me I need to put reverb on my sounds to give them space, and they're probably right, but I have this weird want nowadays to have everything just have zero reverb. I love the sounds being really close to my ears for some reason. But then again, I hate it at the same time. So I should probably start using reverb again.

Anyways. Cheers!

Did I ever mention Penderecki with you? That's what those strings remind me of, with the crazy slides and what not. Sounds like a huge influence on you.

I feel like maybe it's a touch loud? I like how the cool synth thing in the first 15 seconds of the track is the focal point, and the noises from the second half hog the spotlight a little bit.

Also, I don't know if it's the ng audio player or what, but the loop gets snipped at the end. I'm guessing it is, because it does that to my loops all the time, too.

Interesting piece!

HeAvEn-SmiLE responds:

Hey! Thanks a lot, Yes I do know him!

Well I will consider that review, don't worry, I have to admit that it was a test, because I'm learning new ways to entertain people with my sound.

and yes, you can hear some kind of snip, oh well. :v

Ended kinda suddenly. But I suppose that's your modus operandi, haha.

This track is really cool. Lots of layers. That whole thing at 0:20 with all the buzzy staccato synths was a good contrast with the long legato strings.

Had a real nice mood to it.

xxxZigZagxxx responds:

Thanks bro. I gave the beat to my friend and I'm gonna upload that now. I think he significantly improved that with his drums. :)

That freakout part in the second half is crazy. Nice contrast with the chill intro.

And when it comes back to the chill intro was so cash. It was like the equivalent of a 15 years later smash cut in a movie. Like, bam.

I kinda wish during the freakout part that there was a brief stretch where the beat would ride out and I could just nod my head, but as soon as it went 2 or 3 beats or whatever, it would stutter again. Also, the crash didn't ride out. Was that on purpose? I think it might've sounded a little cooler if the crash could reverberate a bit more, instead of ending mad suddenly when the beat would retrigger. That's just me, though. Shit was dope.

xxxZigZagxxx responds:

Yeah I have this inane obsession with making every sound as "dry" as possible and turning the release right down to 0. For some reason I've been making reverb my enemy lately with this subconscious idea that the reverb is artificially making my mixes better. So that's part of the reason why I shortened the crash, I just didn't want it washing over. Maybe it would be better if I included it, IDK.

OH! And also, I forgot. I actually sampled myself. So I created the beat, then I recorded it in Edison, so maybe that's why it's cut off as well. Although I don't recognize why I wouldn't record the whole thing...

I have that certain thing with stuttering, I tend to mess with the loop a little too much. Maybe I'm infatuated with the solo or something. ;)

You and these arpeggios, man. Holy cow.

In the intro, the thing you use for the bassline almost sounds like a heavily compressed snare pattern, so it was kinda disorienting hearing that in tandem with the main snare. It's probably an EQ thing. Lots going on in one narrow range of frequencies.

The second part is dope, though. So clams.

1:04 -- nice drop. I dig the turntable-y stuff too. The drums sound mad cool in this part.

xxxZigZagxxx responds:

I use those arps a lot haha

"the thing you use for the bassline almost sounds like a heavily compressed snare pattern" True that. I will have to watch out for that in the future

"Lots going on in one narrow range of frequencies." That's basically me in a nutshell. Need to get a hold of this mixing deal.

1:04 yes definitely I think this is my favourite part of the song because I haven't really done that style before and I'd like to experiment with it. :)

Thx phospho :)

This could be a cool loop. The portamento slide thing you got going on with the one synth sounds cool. Definitely a very Machinarium vibe going on with this track. I liked the lush ambient noise in the background? Was that a synth pad, or did you mess around with a sample of white noise, or something else? It's got a nice texture to it.

xxxZigZagxxx responds:

Yes the ambient noise in the background is actually a synth of white noise, but altered somewhat. It was created in Sylenth. I've been using Sylenth a lot lately. It sounds kind of like rain, I agree. I was thinking of replacing it with rain, and seeing what it'd be like. :)

That intro, man.

The keyboards you use on here sound awesome.

I'm listening on headphones, so the kick doesn't slam with as much bass as you probably intended it to. I could see this tearing the club up though.

THOSE STRINGS, MAN. OOHHHHHH

Lots of cool syncopation and rhythmic things going on here.

That a choir at like 2:09 or so? It was kinda light in the mix, like it was hiding from me.

That cool little arpeggio thing sounds dope, too

xxxZigZagxxx responds:

lol yes I'm just using Sylenth1 and I downloaded a whole lot of presets

I never seem to know what to do with my kicks. They're probably the weakest part of my entire process. I do like the mixing of the claps and the hi-hats in this, though. But yeah, the concept of mixing kicks to make them sound nice eludes me xD

Yes! I love the strings too, they're a .sf2 I found, not sure from where, but I just searched "orchestral .sf2" i think, or my friend linked me.

I think I overdo the syncopation sometimes, where my tracks become messy, but I *do* like syncopation, like, a lot haha

Yeah that choir could pop out a bit more, tru dat

I agree that arp sounds cool :) Courtesy of sylenth1 bringing you da sounds haha

Cheers, phospho!

I do music because I'm bored.
