Heard this track from your mixtape. I haven't finished listening to it yet, but I dug this track and wanted to find it on here.

That funky arpeggio vocal thing that comes in at 1:08 is sick. The whole beat is sick, actually. I love when that gong/bass thing comes in (kinda sounds like that Gill Frog preset on the Fruity DX 10, but I don't know if you use FL). The drum patterns are really interesting. I like how you play with the pitch on the drum sounds (like the build up at 0:22). The drum beat has so many layers to it, and throughout the track you'll peel them back for a bit, and then bring them back.

I think the tom drums that came in around 1:05 don't gel as well with the way the kicks/snares/hats you use. There might be better sounds out there that do what you're trying to do with that part.

I wasn't even thinking about the bassline when I was listening to the track. It was just there. Holding the track together. You got the perfect notes for the bass, and you got it at that magic volume level.

Whatever happens at 2:16 is so El-P. I love it.

The rapping's pretty good, I liked the line with robocop and the amputees. At 1:38 I think your mic clips a bit. It was a little distracting, but it might just be your mic. I guess you could try standing further away from the mic and rapping louder to compensate for the distance. Then again, I know how sometimes mics (and recording environments, for that matter) can be kinda uncooperative. Also, there were some spots where I couldn't hear what you were saying over the beat, like that line after "I only got a couple more bars left, so..." I had trouble making out what you said there.

That said, I dig this track. I think the attitude from the rapping matches the mood of the beat, which is probably the most important thing. Just a few technical things here and there.

thank you man everybody's been digging the mixtape and you have some pretty sick beats

The primary background sample sounds very cool. Very Fly-Lo esque.

At 0:36 I wasn't entirely sure if that horn sample meshed well with the background sample. If there's a way to chop it up so it fits better, I'd go for it. Later on in the track you play that same horn sample, but by itself, with the background muted, and I think it works better. That might just be me, though.

I think I heard some phantom bass in the snare, and it got a little distracting after I listened to the loop for 10 or so times. I'm not sure if it's the best "note" to be played in that context. Maybe adjust the fadeout on the snare sample or change the pitch or try a different snare or something.

The biggest issue I had with this beat was the kick. You have a freaking killer sample, man! It sounds like freaking 2008 FlyLo. It really needs a NICE bombastic KICK to hold the whole beat together, and I don't think the kick you used is working. It sounds too similar to the snare, and nothing about it screams BASS at me. Also I think it's panned a little to the left -- ideally, kick drums should be completely center. Something about how low frequency waveforms bug people if they're only going in one ear and not both. Science or something, I don't know.

Oh my god, after reading all that, I bet this comes off a bit harsh. I'm really sorry, but I think this track needs a slight push and it could be seriously dope. I mean, I've been listening to it the entire time I was writing this, and writing this took a few minutes. Oh, almost forgot -- in the beginning of the track, those clap/snap samples sound really good. Nice and crunchy.

Solid track, really energetic vocal delivery. I got a few issues with the mix -- it's really heavy on high end stuff, so it sounds like all the instruments up top are duking it out for who sticks out the most, but the bass isn't sticking out that much. I think tweaking some volume levels and bringing the bass up a bit might fix that. I could be totally wrong though -- I'm listening in headphones, and this track sounds designed for a dancefloor, so maybe the acoustics there are totally different and the mix is totally fine. Otherwise I DIG this track. The synth work is outstanding. Lots of layers going on and melodically/harmonically they all mesh extremely well.

The piano chords have really cool voicings. I like the portamento/slidy synth arpeggiating some type of chord throughout. Portamento's really cool, I use it all the time.

2:29's synth was cool, had a cool tone to it.

The whole time I was waiting for some badass bassline to come in as a foundation for the track. Not necessarily drums, I didn't think it was that type of track. But definitely some glue to hold the thing together. Otherwise, I think it's really good. I'm really digging it.

How many tracks are going on here? I was trying to count, and came up with maybe 5? Because of the panning I know there's at least 2, but I heard some chords/harmony too, so I know it's gotta be a little more. Really impressive to be that in time with that much going on. I try doing something like this with guitar and it still takes freaking hours to get it to sound decent. Anyway, good stuff.

samulis responds:

Try using a metronome or a click track, it helps. :)

There are three tracks in the beginning and then a fourth comes in later.

I like the sound of the choir -- was that a synth or samples? The piano has great tone, too. Great mix, really filled my headphones, frequency-wise. Especially the high-pitched clingy things at 1:55, which contrasted really well with the mostly low-end stuff.

Semaphore responds:

Hey phosphorusprocedure,

Thank you very much. I really try to manage to use all frequencies wisely. The used VST's are Nexus 2 and EWQL Symphonic Chors.

I wish I could get my claps to sound that good.

ThaKidd responds:

It's like five sounds meshed together. Layer them and they'll be super dope :)

Man, I love the vocoder. The drums/bassline at 1:04 sound great. The scratches at 1:33 sounded pretty snazzy, too.

Really dug the ooh/ahs at 1:30, and the low pass on the whole beat at 1:45. Cool effect. The flow evokes early 90s Pharcyde type of stuff. Really energetic. I dig this track.

This beat is so default, it hurts. Like, someone just opened up Slayer, Boobass, and FPC, no adjustments, and just went to town googling that Green Day song for a tab or something. It's like neo-grunge or some shit, same aesthetic but new technology.

I do music because I'm bored.
