Quick question: did you use a compressor on the vocals? I noticed the vocals seemed to suddenly get quiet, and then suddenly get loud, and it kinda pulled me out of the song. Compressing it might fix that. (I understand it was recorded on a mic not necessarily designed with music in mind, but it helps to make the most of what you have, right?) I liked the beat a lot, actually. The drums sound great - the kick has oomph, the snares have crunch. I'm fine with the fact there's no bassline, it works well without it. WHAT IS that odd sound effect at the beginning? It sounds like either a feedback loop, or a doppleganger effect gunshot, or something. It sounds really nifty. The melodies are well done, they almost have this middle eastern quality to them. Whole thing sounds quite interesting.

flashmac responds:

Yeah I actually remastered the vocals, this is the old version but i understand what you're talking about, the vocals are a bit drowned by the beat. Glad you liked it overall tho man, thanks for the feedback

The intro was a bit long, but I really liked it when the four-on-the-floor beat and the bassline came in. Your drums don't carry a lot of oomph to them, but I'm sure some EQing/compressing/etc would fix that. Interesting ideas at play.

Genraltweet responds:

Hey, thank you for your advice :) But sadly, I can only use the demo version of FL so I can't do all these super fancy things because I can't save the song. When I get the full version, I'll definitely try what you said!

I like it. I like it a lot. But I think there's just a tad bit too much reverb on the snare. Everything else is great.

sinclayr responds:

i'll keep that in mind for future songs, then. thanks :)

Not bad. The guitar solo was really cool. And I liked that stompy percussion stuff that came in afterwards (sounded like that Radiohead song Giving up the Ghost for a second). And what kind of keyboard was that at the end? A Rhodes? Couldn't really tell, but it sounded great.

thecoreman responds:

Thanks a lot man!

The keys are actually a midi instrument, it's the Scarbee A-200 from Native Instruments' Komplete 7. A pretty awesome instrument, and now that I finally got a great midi keyboard I can start using it properly :)

Thanks for the review! Appreciated!

Really cool. The samples have great, dusty texture, despite being sampled from... mp3s? My favorite thing about the track is the drums, especially when the drum pattern does a reverse snare and comes back. It sounds so darn cool. I also noticed you used the 90s hip hop boombap kind of bassline, which was a nice touch. Excellent work all around!

JackRocker responds:

Yeahh, unfortunately, the sample was an MP3. If I could get wavs, that would be awesome, but I guess I'll have to settle, haha. If you look to the left of the screen, you'll see a link to the song I sampled.

I really liked the drums as well. I thought the drum sample fit the old school feel well. The bassline was also sampled from the same song, I just did a lot of EQ'ing to get it to stand out more. I may have run it through a bass amp simulator too, but I don't remember.

Glad you liked it man! Check out some of my others! And thanks a lot for the review.

Beat's ridiculous. The samples are bloody awesome. Nice rapping, too.

ThisIsWatley responds:

thank u very much! means a lot!

You know... for a joke song, this is mixed and mastered particularly well. And it's catchy. The only thing that bugged me was when the auto-tune couldn't make up its mind what note to snap your voice to, so it would toggle back and forth between a couple notes (bah-uh-AH-uh-eeh-ah). They're decent melodies, man - worth showcasing. Other than that, though - excellent work. (and the lyrics cracked me up)

wyldfyre1 responds:

it was a blast to make. thanks for Listening.

You know what? I was really trying to get jiggy to this. The only problem was, the drums were REALLY compressed. They kind of sounded like someone sloshing through a puddle. Everything else sounds really great though - I like the synths. Everything's very catchy. I think if you fixed up the drums, the whole thing would sound lovely.

Tarteviant responds:

OMG Thanks I never realized unless somebody told me I just addicted to BASS and I can't help it :/ lol thanks

This is cool - this reminds me of the part in a movie where the villain's going around killing everyone, but there's no sound effects, just a creepy song playing in the background. Now that your voice is back to normal (I assume - this track was submitted a while ago, right?) it might be cool to go back over it with some vocal harmonies or something.

FairSquare responds:

Ah, that is a cool image you sketch. You know, about that villain :p
I don't think i'll go back to this again though (even though my voice is indeed back to normal), because there are just fragments of songs and the timing is off sometimes because of that. Nice idea though :)
And thanks for reviewing!

I do music because I'm bored.
